Towards a platform for DNA testing

DNA chip technology is drawing attention in the post genome market where rapid growth is expected. At present, DNA chips are predominantly used in research as a technology that simplifies the study of gene sequences and expression. However, their use is expected to expand into medical practice, the food, farm and fishery industries and various other fields.
In the 1990s, convinced of the importance of personalized treatment in reducing patient burden, Toshiba invented an "electrochemical DNA chip", an original technology developed to facilitate automation and high test precision.
Based on this technology, it has continued to develop technology for research-oriented DNA chips, DNA analysis equipment and peripheral equipment.
Then, in 2006, Toshiba took another step towards practical application and addressing the needs of medical practice as well as numerous other fields requiring DNA testing.
In the 21st century, Toshiba will build a platform for DNA testing by providing cheap, accurate DNA chips that can be used by anyone.

Towards realization of personalized medical treatment

Starting with a research chip to predict the efficacy of interferon, a hepatitis C medication, Toshiba has been striving to produce commercially viable chips to determine the genotype of viruses that cause infectious diseases, and predict the efficacy and side-effects of rheumatism medications and other drugs.
Striving towards an era in which individual patients can be provided with the optimum treatment for them, Toshiba's DNA testing system will contribute significantly to the development of personalized treatment in the 21st century.

Towards building a safe and secure society

In the midst of international terrorism, frequent occurrence of accidents and disasters, fraud of food, and other incidents threatening our safety and security, Toshiba strives to develop commercially viable systems to facilitate quick and easy on-site DNA testing for use in the fields of counter-bioterrorism, food inspection and personal authentication.
