Pump Starting Equipment

Reversible pump-turbines and generator-motors have been getting to be higher head, higher speed, and larger output in view point of saving construction cost for pumped storage power stations. Because of reversible pumped storage units, which have the said tendency, they require some suitable methods for pump starting. The methods should be considered, for instance, on the following points;

  • Reliability in pump starting system
  • Stability both in power system and on unit shaft system
  • Economical pump starting equipment
  • Easy maintenance on pump starting equipment
  • Rational pump starting of plural pumped storage units

The pump starting methods and typical experiences are introduced on subsequent pages.

The possible pump starting methods and their features are;

  • Synchronous starting method: This method, simple in its starting circuit, is applicable to any generator-motors including high-speed and large output units. However, being incapable of self-starting, it requires a generator for starting.
  • Static converter starting method: While requiring a frequency converter, this method is applicable to any pumped storage units and no restriction is imposed on construction of them. Because of static type, the converter is highly reliable and offers facilitated maintenance.
  • Damper winding starting and pony motor starting methods are not recommendable for future big pumped storage units.
